Biography

Stanley F. Nelson, MD, is a Professor-in-Residence at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the David Geffen School of Medicine. He is a board-certified pediatrician with specialized experience in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and rare diseases. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Michigan in 1982 and earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1987. Nelson completed his pediatric training and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at UCSF before joining UCLA's faculty in 1993. He has significantly contributed to the field through his role as Co-Director of the Clinical Genomics Center, where he has pioneered clinical genomic testing and exome sequencing at UCLA. As the principal investigator for the Undiagnosed Diseases Network, he leads efforts in discovering new rare diseases. Additionally, he founded and co-directs the Center for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which encompasses educational programs, research, and clinical care for patients. His laboratory has published over 280 manuscripts focusing on the natural history of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and novel therapeutic strategies, providing care for over 200 patients and enhancing the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases.
