Dr. Stavroula Pantazopoulou

Biography

Stavroula Pantazopoulou is a Professor at York University in the Lassonde School of Engineering, with expertise in Structural Mechanics and Earthquake Engineering, particularly emphasizing Performance-Based Engineering. Her work focuses on Seismic Design, Assessment, and Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Structures using emerging materials and technologies. She conducts research on developing strain-resilient cementitious materials and corrosion-resistant durable retrofits, aiming to enhance novel structural designs that minimize the necessary use of confining shear reinforcement while maintaining ductility. Additionally, she explores the use of nanomaterials in construction and the exploitation of industrial waste in concrete to improve understanding of the relationships between mechanical properties and overall performance. Her research incorporates advanced numerical simulations to analyze material responses from microstructure to macroscopically observed behavior in structural components. Professor Pantazopoulou completed her Master's, Doctoral, and Post Doctoral studies in Civil Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley and holds an Engineering Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Before her current role, she served as a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, a Professor at the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece, and Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Cyprus. Throughout her career, she has supervised Doctoral students and held various international academic positions.
