Biography

Stef van Weeghel is a professor of International Tax Law at the University of Amsterdam, where he also serves as the Chair of the Tax Department and the Director of the Amsterdam Centre for Tax Law. He graduated from the University of Leiden in Business Law (1983) and Tax Law (1987) and obtained an LLM in Taxation from New York University (1990). He received his doctorate in Law from the University of Amsterdam in 1997, with a dissertation on the Improper Use of Tax Treaties. In 2000, he was appointed as a professor specializing in International Tax Law. Van Weeghel has authored and co-authored several books and numerous articles in the field of international taxation. Additionally, he has extensive experience as a partner at major law firms and has held significant roles in various tax policy organizations, including being a member of the Dutch Association for Tax Research and the International Fiscal Association. His academic research focuses on the interpretation of tax treaties, the abuse of tax treaties, and their interaction with bilateral investment treaties. He has also provided extensive advice on tax policy and strategic tax issues to both clients and government entities. Moreover, Van Weeghel is involved in arbitration proceedings and has appeared as an expert in high-profile tax matters before multiple jurisdictions.
