Biography

Stefan Bauer holds a professorship in Algorithmic Machine Learning & Explainable AI at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His research focuses on developing approaches that enable models to refine internal hypotheses, adapt to computation tasks, and work with discrete, structured representations. His team's capabilities are aimed at strengthening a model’s ability to form abstractions, perform adaptive inference, and manage multi-step decision-making. The ultimate goal of his work is to advance AI systems that can tackle increasingly complex reasoning tasks with greater flexibility and precision, thus helping to uncover the underlying principles of intelligence. Prior to joining TUM, he was an assistant professor at KTH Stockholm and a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, with additional experience as a visiting researcher at MILA, GSK, and Microsoft Research. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from ETH Zurich. In 2025, he will be a CIFAR LMB Fellow and co-coordinate the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative, which is one of Germany’s major national efforts in developing large-scale AI models.
