Biography

Stefan Bengtsson is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Education at Uppsala University. His research focuses on sustainability education, didactics in curriculum theory, and comparative education both in analysis of teaching and instruction. He served as the national coordinator for ESD Sweden from 2015 to 2018 and has been the convenor of the Environmental Sustainability Education network of the European Education Research Association from 2018 to 2023. Alongside his academic engagements, he has provided technical assistance for international efforts addressing sustainability and gender issues in education, particularly within the East and South-East Asian contexts. His work involves understanding the conditions of possibility for change in education and learning, with a critical lens drawn from curriculum studies and political theory. Currently, he is investigating the conditions for learning and education in the Anthropocene, aiming to translate realist ontology into educational contexts. His previous research projects include the International Monitoring and Evaluating Climate Communication Education Project, SUSTEMO on sustainability transitions, Science Education Action Engagement for Sustainability, and Climate Friendly Vacation Practices.
