Biography

Stefan Bilbao studied Physics at Harvard University, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1992, before completing his MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in 1996 and 2001, respectively. He has held positions as a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher in prominent institutions, including the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast and the Stanford Space Telecommunications Radioscience Laboratory. His current research focuses on sound synthesis based on physical models of musical instruments, particularly employing numerical simulation techniques like finite difference methods. Stefan's interests extend to Hamiltonian symplectic methods and audio rendering using GPUs in collaboration with the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre. His research contributions are part of an ERC-funded project named NESS, aimed at enhancing room acoustics and sound synthesis methods. Throughout his career, he has actively supervised PhD students in diverse topics including acoustics, digital signal processing, and audio technology in music.
