Biography

Professor Stefan Bleeck has a background in Physics, obtaining his Diploma from the University of Darmstadt in 1995. He developed a fascination for the complex structure of the human brain and pursued a PhD in computational neuroscience at the University of Darmstadt, Germany, focusing on temporal processing within neurons. He has held a lectureship at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton since 2005, leading research in the Hearing and Balance Centre with a strong emphasis on speech intelligibility in those with hearing impairments. Promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2019 and achieving professorship in 2016, Professor Bleeck aims to use his knowledge of physiology and psychology to assist individuals with hearing impairments to comprehend speech better. He currently directs the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR). His research interests include bio-inspired auditory modeling, speech intelligibility in noise, cochlear implants, and auditory evoked potentials, utilizing computational models and experimental approaches to enhance understanding and rehabilitation of auditory functions.
