Stefan Dollinger is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where his research spans dialectology, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics. His work primarily focuses on 'non-dominant' varieties of larger languages, particularly Canadian English and Austrian German, exploring a variety of variables, including syntax, lexis, and phonetics. He began his academic career in Austria as an Assistant Professor at Vienna University before holding positions in Germany as a Canadian Studies Guest Professor at the University of Kiel and in Sweden as a Full Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Gothenburg. Dollinger joined UBC as a postdoctoral fellow from 2006 to 2009 and has since been involved in significant research examining the linguistic effects of political borders. Currently on sabbatical, he is working on a book intended for general audiences titled “Making Canadian English.” His research interests extend to the interaction of language variation and its indexing of social meaning from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives.
