Biography

Stefan Kurtz has been leading the Bioinformatics group at the Center for Bioinformatics at the University of Hamburg since 2002. He has a scientific background in computer science, holding a diploma from the University of Dortmund (1990) and a doctorate from the University of Bielefeld (1995). Prior to 2002, he worked as a scientific assistant in the Practical Computer Science group under Robert Giegerich. In 1996 and 1997, he served as a PostDoc with Gene Myers at the University of Arizona in Tucson, USA. Kurtz and his team have developed numerous software tools for the analysis and comparison of genomes, with notable tools including MUMmer, Vmatch, and GenomeTools. He has also initiated and established the M.Sc. in Bioinformatics program at the University of Hamburg, serving as the program coordinator, chair of the examination board, and a member of the selection committee for this program.
