Biography

Professor Stefan Lichtenthaler conducts innovative research on the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. His goal is to gain a better understanding of common forms of dementia, and to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches capable of predicting possible side effects of medications. His research employs biochemical proteomic methods and quantitative mass spectrometry. Professor Lichtenthaler studied chemistry at the Universities of Karlsruhe, Montpellier in France, and Heidelberg, where he earned his doctoral degree at the Center for Molecular Biology of Heidelberg University. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University in the USA and led a junior research group at LMU Munich, where he completed his postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) focusing on biochemistry. In 2009, he was appointed head of the newly established Department at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and became a full professor of proteomics at TUM DZNE in 2012.
