Biography

Stefan Schuerch is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Bern. His academic journey began with graduate studies in chemistry at the University of Bern from 1985 to 1990, followed by a Ph.D. in organic chemistry under Prof. Urs P. Schlunegger. He further enhanced his expertise with a postdoctoral position at the University of California at Riverside, working with Prof. Charles L. Wilkins. Dr. Schuerch has been a key figure in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bern since 1997, first as a senior assistant, and transitioning to lecturer and then to associate professor in 2017. His research primarily focuses on mass spectrometric characterization of nucleic acids and their therapeutically relevant analogues, employing mass spectrometry to elucidate gas-phase behavior of oligonucleotides and higher-order structures' interactions with anti-cancer metallodrugs. He also investigates the characterization of spider hemolymph venom components. Dr. Schuerch has contributed extensively to the scientific community through his publications and is actively engaged in teaching and research mentoring.
