Dr. Stefan Symeonides

Biography

Stefan Symeonides is a clinical academic in experimental cancer medicine, currently serving as a Professor and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh. He leads clinical trials for new cancer treatments linked with the Edinburgh Cancer Centre. His research primarily focuses on the discovery and development of novel cancer therapies, and he has a particular specialty in renal cancers as part of the Uro-oncology team. Professor Symeonides runs the Phase Trials Unit, overseeing early-phase clinical trials, which involve collaborations across the laboratory, clinic, and industry settings. He is heavily involved in drug development and holds an advisory role at CRUK’s Centre for Drug Development for multiple UK biotechs. His key interests include the integration of cancer immunotherapies, aiming to enhance their efficacy. He leads the Edinburgh Cancer Immunology Research Network and was involved in initiating the FAK-PD1 trial, which exemplifies the translational research efforts connecting laboratory findings to clinical applications. His work is supported by collaborations across various institutions, including his partnerships with Cancer Research UK, and he has a record of significant contributions in the field of medical oncology and novel therapeutics.
