Biography

Stefania Milan works at the intersection of political participation, technology, and governance, focusing on the infrastructure of political agency. She is a Professor of Critical Data Studies at the University of Amsterdam and is affiliated with the Florence School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute. She is the Principal Investigator for the project DATAGOV-Governance Data Infrastructure Post-Pandemic Democracy, funded by the European Research Council. Stefania holds a PhD in Political and Social Science from the European University Institute. Prior to joining the University of Amsterdam, she worked at Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, Tilburg University, and Central European University. From 2015 to 2021, Stefania was the Principal Investigator for the DATACTIVE project, which investigates the implications of algorithms and datafication on marginalized communities. In 2017, she co-founded the Big Data South Research Initiative, which aims to understand the impact of datafication and surveillance on communities at the margins. Stefania is passionate about experimenting with participatory and computational methods in her research and has been described as 'undisciplined.' Outside of academia, she enjoys cycling, mountain activities, and boxing.
