Biography

Stefanie Stantcheva is the Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center. She is the founder and director of the Social Economics Lab, focusing on the taxation of firms and individuals and how people perceive and form attitudes towards economic issues and policies. Her recent research explores public attitudes towards taxation, trade, immigration, climate change, and social mobility through large-scale social economics surveys and experiments. She has studied the long-lasting effects of tax policy on innovation, education, and wealth creation. Her work provides insights into how R&D policies can foster innovation and how corporate income taxes have shaped innovation in the 20th century. Stantcheva was awarded the 2025 John Bates Clark Medal for her significant contributions to economic thought and knowledge. She has also received the 2020 Elaine Bennett Research Prize, and is a Sloan Foundation fellow, a Guggenheim fellow, and an Andrew Carnegie Fellow. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 2014 and was a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows from 2014 to 2016 before joining the Harvard Department of Economics in July 2016. She currently serves as a co-editor for the Quarterly Journal of Economics.
