Steffen Staab studied computer science and computational linguistics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. He worked in the computational linguistics research group at the University of Freiburg and earned his Ph.D. in computer science from the faculty of technology in 1998. Afterward, he joined the University of Stuttgart at the Institute IAT & Fraunhofer IAO, later moving to the University of Karlsruhe (now known as KIT). He progressed through various roles including project lead, lecturer, and senior lecturer, achieving his habilitation in 2002. In 2004, he became a professor of databases and information systems at the University of Koblenz-Landau, where he founded the Institute Web Science Technologies (WeST) in 2009 and served as its head until 2020. In February 2020, he took the chair in Analytic Computing at the Institute for Parallel and Distributed Systems at the University of Stuttgart. He has been a professor of Web Computer Science at the University of Southampton since March 2015.
