Biography

Stella Betts is a founding partner of LEVENBETTS, an award-winning architecture practice based in New York City. The firm specializes in a wide range of design scales including urban design, public architecture, housing, commercial workspaces, exhibitions, and furniture design. LEVENBETTS has received national and international recognition through various awards, exhibitions, and publications, including the prestigious AIA New York State Firm of the Year award. In 2020, Stella was acknowledged as an Architectural Record’s Women in Architecture Generation Leader. The firm has garnered eleven AIA awards in New York City and is currently involved in significant projects such as the design of a 300,000 square foot Life Sciences Laboratory Building in Harlem and partial renovations for the Queens Museum. They also contributed to the museum exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum. LEVENBETTS published a notable monograph, 'Pattern Recognition,' detailing a decade of the firm’s practice. In fall 2021, Stella's upcoming book, 'Thirteen Ways of Looking at a House,' will explore thirteen residential projects by the firm in the context of current architectural discourse. She has taught at several prestigious institutions including Cornell University, Columbia University, Parsons School of Design, Cooper Union, and Syracuse University. Stella Holds a Bachelor of Arts from Connecticut College and a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Architectural League.
