Biography

Professor Stepan Wood’s research focuses on sustainability, globalization, transnational governance, voluntary environmental standards, climate change, environmental law, corporate social responsibility, and social justice. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Law, Society, and Sustainability at the Peter Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia, where he also directs the Centre for Law and Environment. His current projects address issues such as rights of nature, environmental rights, and the historical context of English law in colonial British Columbia. From 2011 to 2020, he led the interdisciplinary Transnational Business Governance Interactions project, a global research network examining the dynamics of transnational initiatives that regulate global business. Wood's notable publications include a co-edited book with Kenneth W. Abbott titled 'Transnational Business Governance Interactions: Advancing Marginalized Actors and Enhancing Regulatory Quality' (Elgar 2019) and the co-authored book 'Perilous Imbalance' (UBC Press, 2010), which was shortlisted for the Donald Smiley award for the best book in Canadian politics. He is also the founding co-chair of the Willms & Shier Moot, Canada's leading environmental law moot court competition for law students and has participated actively in Canada's national committee for environmental management standards.
