Biography

Stephan Haggard is a Research Professor at the University of California, San Diego, and holds the title of Lawrence Sallye Krause Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He serves as the Director Emeritus of the Korea-Pacific Program and as Research Director of Global Governance at the Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC). His teaching focuses on international relations, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region and issues concerning the Korean peninsula, emphasizing the political economy and security dynamics. Haggard has conducted extensive research on North Korea, publishing several notable works, including 'Famine in North Korea: Markets, Aid, and Reform' and 'Witness Transformation: Refugee Insights from North Korea'. His scholarly interest extends to the transitions to democratic rule, examining the current trends of democratic backsliding.
