Stephan Peake grew up in Southern Ontario during the 1970s and early 1980s. He began his undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph in 1988 and graduated with a general Bachelor of Science in 1993. During his time, he pursued a career as a commercial pilot; however, he ultimately returned to Guelph to upgrade his degree to an honours degree, allowing him to enter the MSc program. His honours undergraduate thesis focused on the swimming capacity of lake sturgeon and fishway passage, a topic he continued to explore at the University of Waterloo in an MSc program, with fieldwork occurring in Newfoundland. Following his MSc, he enrolled in a PhD program at Simon Fraser University, focusing on the behaviour, physiology, and biomechanics of fish swimming in large raceways. His doctoral work was funded by Manitoba Hydro and took place in the province. After completing his doctorate, he accepted a faculty position at UNB as part of an industrial research chair program sponsored by Manitoba Hydro and NSERC. In the early part of his career, his research concentrated on fish passage and the ecology of lake sturgeon in the Winnipeg River. Recently, his work has shifted to focus on culvert passage for fish in New Brunswick and the ecology of Atlantic salmon, sturgeon, and muskellunge at the Mactaquac Generating Station as a small part of a project led by Dr. Allen Curry.
