Dr. Stephane Bourque

Biography

Stephane Bourque is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta. He completed his PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology at Queen's University in 2009 and holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Life Sciences from the same institution, awarded in 2003. His research focuses on cardiovascular pharmacology, particularly the mechanisms of blood pressure control and vascular function in health and disease. Bourque's studies delve into understanding how iron deficiency during pregnancy impacts maternal health and the health of offspring, linking it to the development of non-communicable diseases later in life. He has identified the challenges surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency during pregnancy and is working to develop novel strategies to improve outcomes. His ongoing research examines the effects of neonatal sepsis on cardiovascular development and function in adulthood, in collaboration with various health organizations in Canada. His work is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and other foundational groups. Bourque has published several impactful articles addressing iron deficiency, maternal health, and vascular dysfunction, contributing significantly to the field of cardiovascular pharmacology.
