Biography

Stéphane Lafortune is the N. Harris McClamroch Professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He earned his B.Eng. degree from École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1980, an M.Eng. degree from McGill University in 1982, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1986. Lafortune joined the University of Michigan in September 1986 and was appointed N. Harris McClamroch Collegiate Professor in March 2018. He is a Fellow of IEEE since 1999 and of the International Federation of Automatic Control since 2017. His notable awards include the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1990 and the Axelby Outstanding Paper Award from the Control Systems Society of IEEE in 1994 and 2001. Lafortune's research interests focus on discrete event systems, encompassing modeling, diagnosis, control, optimization, and applications in computer software systems. He is the lead developer of the software package UMDES and has co-developed DESUMA with L. Ricker. Lafortune has co-authored the textbook "Introduction to Discrete Event Systems" (Third Edition, Springer, 2021) with C. Cassandras and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems: Theory and Applications from 2015 to 2020.
