Dr. Stephanie Chang

Biography

Stephanie E. Chang is a professor at the University of British Columbia, holding a joint appointment between the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) and the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES) since January 2004. She has been awarded the Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Disaster Management and Urban Sustainability, reflecting her expertise and commitment to advancing knowledge in these critical areas. Dr. Chang received the prestigious Shah Family Innovation Prize in 2001 from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and was recognized as a Distinguished Lecturer by EERI in 2011. In 2018, she was honored with the Distinguished Research Award from the Integrated Disaster Risk Management Society (IDRiM) for her significant contributions to the field. Her research focuses on urban risk dynamics, disaster recovery, resilience, infrastructure systems, and climate change adaptation with an aim to bridge engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. Throughout her career, Dr. Chang has served on the editorial boards of several notable journals and has made substantial contributions through empirical investigations of major urban disasters as well as computer modeling and analysis of risk reduction strategies. She is dedicated to studying disaster risk reduction and planning resilient communities, particularly in the context of sustainable practices against natural hazards and climate change adaptation.
