Biography

Stephanie J. Nawyn is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. Her research and teaching expertise lie in migration, refugees, and gender. Nawyn served as a Fulbright Fellow at the Women’s Research Center of Istanbul University during 2013-14 and has been an affiliated faculty member at the Center for Forced Migration Studies at Northwestern University from 2011 to 2018. She has co-edited significant works such as the Routledge International Handbook of Migration Studies and Gender Prism Difference. Her recent publications appear in respected journals including Journal of Refugee Studies, Journal of Ethnic and Racial Studies, and Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health. Currently, Nawyn examines how humanitarian organizations address COVID-19 infections among refugees in Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan and leads a team of 24 researchers focused on refugee humanitarian interventions affected by COVID-19. She is also initiating a new line of research on climate change and migration with an upcoming article in the International Migration Review. Additionally, Nawyn contributes to the NSF ADVANCE project, promoting STEM intersectional equity in departmental cultures at research-intensive universities.
