Biography

Stephen R. Barley is the Weiland Professor and Emeritus Faculty in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. in Organization Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has a varied academic background with degrees from the College of William and Mary and Ohio State University. Prior to his tenure at Stanford, he was a faculty member in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University for ten years. Barley's research focuses on the impact of new technologies on work and organizations, technical work, and organizational culture. He has authored numerous influential articles in management studies and served in several editorial capacities, including as editor for the Administrative Science Quarterly and founding editor of the Stanford Social Innovation Review. His recognition includes the New Concept Award from the Academy of Management and several distinctions for his scholarly contributions. Barley has also consulted for various industries and teaches courses on organizational theory and network analysis. Currently, his research interests include the exploration of corporate power in the United States and the implications of technological change in organizational settings.
