Dr. Stephen Bearne

Biography

Stephen L. Bearne is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University. With a PhD from the University of Toronto and an MDCM from McGill University, Bearne has dedicated his career to understanding enzyme catalysis and protein engineering. His research focuses on enzyme mechanisms, enzyme inhibition, and the biochemical properties of proteins. He has led various research initiatives including the Protein Assembly Research Team and the BioActives CREATE Training Program. Bearne's work is significant in advancing our understanding of how enzymes work, particularly in relation to diseases such as cancer and neglected tropical diseases. He has published extensively in reputed journals and has contributed to the development of new methodologies in enzymology, including proteomics and enzyme kinetics. His laboratory emphasizes a diverse and inclusive environment for students to develop critical analytical and technical skills in biochemistry.
