Biography

Stephen K. Benirschke, M.D. is a Professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine. He holds the Jerome H. Debs II Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Traumatology. Dr. Benirschke completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at the University of California, San Diego in 1975, followed by a Doctor of Medicine degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1979. He underwent surgical internship and a five-year residency in Orthopaedics at Case Western Reserve University. He is board certified and has completed a fellowship at Rätisches Kantons-und Regional Hospital in Switzerland. Since joining the University of Washington as an Acting Instructor in 1985 and becoming a full Professor in 2000, he has contributed significantly to the Resident Selection Committee and the Musculoskeletal Core Course. His clinical interests focus on foot and ankle trauma and reconstruction, as well as articular fractures and foot and ankle problems. Dr. Benirschke has published over 45 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to 3 book chapters, and presented at numerous medical meetings, emphasizing his role as a primary investigator for the AO ASIF Research Grant. He has been recognized for his teaching excellence with the Resident Teaching Award in 1997.
