Biography

Stephen joined the School of Law at the University of Glasgow in 2014. His academic qualifications include an MA in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh (2005), an LLB from the University of Strathclyde (2007), an LLM in Research from the University of Edinburgh (2012), and a PhD in Law from the University of Edinburgh (2016). He is a qualified solicitor in Scotland (2010) but no longer practices law. His teaching encompasses a range of subjects including delict, contract, property, international sales law, and the history of legal thought. He is the convenor of Obligations 1A, a core LLB subject that introduces students to the law of delict in Scotland, and also teaches a honors course titled 'Debates in Private Law Theory', which examines foundational and contemporary debates within private law. Stephen has played an active role in the School's undergraduate admissions and has been involved in widening participation initiatives. He co-initiated the revamp of the Law and Philosophy programme to strengthen the interdisciplinary approach to legal education. He is also a member of the Legal Theory research group and serves as convenor of the Private Law research group. In 2024, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
