Biography

Steve joined the University of Waikato in 1998 after completing his Ph.D. in strategy governance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His current research focuses on family business and sustainability within the broader area of strategy. Steve has ongoing projects exploring the influence and performance of family businesses in New Zealand, particularly concerning socio-emotional wealth. His recent work has examined how family businesses approach sustainability. He is case-driven and has authored fifty case studies on New Zealand companies, which have been featured in the Waikato Management School Case Competition. Steve teaches strategy at the undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily using the case teaching method. In addition, he serves as the Academic Director for Work-Integrated Learning at the Waikato Management School, where he oversees student internships and processes. His career has involved extensive engagement with industry and the wider community, including consulting and advising.
