Dr. Stephen Brett

Biography

Professor Stephen Brett is a consultant in intensive care medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He leads a comprehensive program focused on the patient journey from surgery through critical illness, emphasizing the importance of resuscitation. His projects span epidemiology, public health, and the clinical evaluation of the impact of surgical interventions and chronic diseases, as well as technology evaluations. Professor Brett is part of the section on Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine, and Intensive Care, and has a keen interest in understanding and optimizing long-term outcomes following critical illness. He is the chief investigator for several clinical studies, both locally and nationally, and leads the NICE guideline development group that published the guideline 'Rehabilitation Critical Illness'. Additionally, he provides valuable support for various clinical trials as a trial steering group and data monitoring safety committee chair. His recent research developments include the fields of human factors, organizational psychology, and the use of machine learning in community risk prediction. He served as the past President of the Intensive Care Society and has been an editor for the journal Critical Care, contributing his expertise to several advisory groups within the Department of Health and providing consultancy to the industry, particularly in clinical trial design and supervision.
