Dr. Stephen Buka

Biography

Stephen L. Buka, ScD, is a Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Brown University School of Public Health. His research focuses on the causes and prevention of neuropsychiatric disorders, with extensive work in neuropsychology and psychiatric epidemiology. Dr. Buka has led significant longitudinal studies that examine how birth complications, environmental hazards, and socioeconomic conditions impact behavioral and intellectual development. He directs the New England Family Study, a prospective, three-generation study of 5,000 participants from Boston and Providence, combining family design, discordant sibling sets, molecular genetics, and psychiatric assessments. Dr. Buka served as Principal Investigator for multiple sites of the National Children’s Study and has participated in expert committees for the Institute of Medicine and various federal and state agencies. His interests include identifying prenatal risks for schizophrenia and other addictive disorders, and he utilizes neuroimaging and molecular genetics techniques in his research. Dr. Buka's extensive funding history includes projects from major foundations and the National Institutes of Health, and he has published widely in leading journals in the fields of epidemiology and public health.
