Biography

Stephen C. Cannon is a Professor and Chair of Physiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. His master's thesis explored increased muscle stiffness and the intensity of stretch reflex mechanical loading and its relationship to instability causing tremor. After graduation, he entered the Medical Scientists Training Program at Johns Hopkins University under Professor David Robinson, where he identified the locus of the brainstem neural integrator for the oculomotor system and demonstrated the lateral inhibition as a critical feature of the premotor circuit. Dr. Cannon completed his medical internship and neurology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was chief resident in 1990. He has made significant contributions in the field of ion channelopathies, particularly in skeletal muscle, and has established a lab dedicated to investigating the mechanistic basis of inherited disorders caused by mutations in voltage-gated ion channels. His research has led to important discoveries regarding the pathomechanisms of various ion channel diseases and the development of preclinical therapeutic strategies. In 2010, he became Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education at UT Dallas, developing a combined BA/MD program. In 2015, he was recruited to UCLA as Chair of Physiology.
