Biography

Stephen Carr returned to South Korea this season to direct 'The Rising World,' a world premiere lauded by the Korea Herald as 'a bold promising step.' He made his Koerner Hall debut with the Royal Conservatory Music's production of 'Dialogues des Carmélites' and has directed productions like 'Carmen' with the Toronto City Opera and 'La Traviata' with Opera York. His 2019 production of 'La Bohème' at Daejeon Opera was hailed as a 'significant milestone,' with futuristic staging grounded in realism. His recent international projects include conducting 'Lucia di Lammermoor' with the Korean National Symphony and works at the Seoul Arts Center. Carr has extensive directing experience with various U.S. opera companies, including the Washington National Opera and Palm Beach Opera. As a member of Actor’s Equity, he has also performed in major productions such as 'Ragtime' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' Carr spent eight years as an Associate Professor in Opera and Musical Theatre Studies at the Eastman School of Music, where he directed several acclaimed productions, received the American Prize in Stage Directing, and taught numerous courses. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Musical Theatre at the Senzoku Gakuen Conservatory of Music in Tokyo, contributing to the development of musical theatre programs in Asia, while also living in Toronto and pursuing his PhD studies in musicology and ethnomusicology at York University.
