Stephen Cattle grew up on a wheat-sheep farm in central western New South Wales. He graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours) in 1991 and completed his PhD in Soil Science in 1995. He was appointed as a lecturer in soil science at the Faculty of Agriculture in 1997, where he has taught various soil science and agricultural science units and conducted research on the influence of dust as a soil-forming factor in agriculturally important soils of NSW. He has served in various administrative roles, including that of Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and as chair of the Academic Board's Undergraduate Studies Committee. Stephen has also been active in the soil science community, serving as the Federal President of the Australian Society of Soil Science from 2007 to 2008 and has been a champion of soil judging in Australia since 2012. His research interests focus on aeolian dust as a soil-forming factor, the recovery of soils affected by wind erosion, and the transport of heavy metals in the environment. He has supervised student research projects related to soil changes and contamination, and his work contributes to the Faculty of Science's research strengths in understanding climate and environmental change.
