Biography

Stephen H Cheeke is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. He obtained his B.A. from Cambridge and his Ph.D. from Bristol. His research focuses on Romanticism, particularly the works of Byron and P.B. Shelley. Cheeke authored the monograph 'Byron Place: History, Translation, Nostalgia' (2003) and 'Writing Art: Aesthetics and Ekphrasis' (2008). His recent book, 'Transfiguration: Religion and Art in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Aestheticism', published in 2016, explores significant themes related to art and religion through the works of John Ruskin, Walter Pater, D.G. Rossetti, and Robert Browning. In 2024, he will publish a study of Walter Pater that delves into ideas of personhood, personality, and style, and investigates Pater's reception. His research interests also encompass the early works of W.B. Yeats, Symbolism, and Decadence of the 1890s, as well as modernist literature from authors such as T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, and Virginia Woolf. Cheeke is currently teaching courses on literature from 1740-1900, modernist writers, American literature, and Victorian literature, particularly focusing on poetry and poetics at the MA level.
