Biography

Stephen Chmely is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on the development of emerging bioproducts, specifically in the areas of additive manufacturing and the applications of lignocellulosic biomass. He explores synthetic chemistry and catalytic transformations related to biomass and conducts spectroscopic characterization of bio-derived molecules. Stephen earned his A.S. in Chemistry from Volunteer State Community College in 2003, followed by a B.S. in Chemistry Physics from Western Kentucky University in 2006 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University in 2010. He has held various postdoctoral research positions, including at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and served as a Research Assistant Professor at the Center for Renewable Carbon at the University of Tennessee. His teaching includes courses such as Agricultural Biorenewable Products and Biobased Polymers.
