Biography

Stephen Coate is a prominent economist focused on the development and analysis of theoretical models relating to public policy issues. He completed his B.Sc (Econ) degree in Economics at University College of Swansea in 1980 and earned an M.A. in Public Policy Planning with distinction from the University of Sussex in 1981. Coate holds the position of Kiplinger Professor of Public Policy in the Department of Economics at Cornell University. His previous appointments include notable positions at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Department of Economics at both the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. Coate has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. In his research, he has tackled various contemporary issues including the design of welfare programs and regulations in broadcasting, with a special interest in political economy topics such as campaign finance policies and public health insurance. He has produced significant contributions to public economics and microeconomic theory, alongside several high-profile publications in esteemed economic journals.
