Biography

Dr. Stephen C. De Rosa is a Research Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology at the University of Washington, where he has been involved in HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) for the past eight years. He leads the flow cytometry laboratory and oversees the operation and maintenance of flow cytometer analyzers and sorters. His role includes direct supervision of HVTN Research & Development technicians involved in the development and optimization of new flow cytometry-based assays. De Rosa also consults with the Endpoints Laboratory manager on the performance analysis of validated flow cytometric assays conducted on clinical trial samples. After graduating from medical school, he undertook clinical training and pursued a full-time career in basic applied research. He was trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the Herzenberg Laboratory at Stanford, a pioneer in flow cytometry technology. He furthered his expertise under Mario Roederer at the NIH Vaccine Research Center, where he implemented intracellular cytokine staining assays to evaluate vaccine-induced T cells. His work on functional assays using advanced technology for high throughput analysis of clinical trial samples has earned him international recognition.
