Biography

J. Stephen Downie is a professor and the Executive Associate Dean at the School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois. He is also the Co-Director of the HathiTrust Research Center. He actively participates in research within digital libraries and digital humanities. Downie is known for his significant contributions to the music information retrieval research community, including directing the annual Music Information Retrieval Evaluation eXchange (MIREX) since 2005 and founding the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR), where he served as president. His research interests span the design and evaluation of information retrieval systems, multimedia music information retrieval, database design, internetworked communication systems, and web-based technologies.
