Biography

Stephen R. Durham is the Head of the Allergy Clinical Immunology section at the National Heart & Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London. He qualified from Downing College, Cambridge, and Guy's Hospital, London, in 1976. Following this, he trained in general respiratory medicine at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, and the Royal Brompton Hospital, along with other prominent hospitals in Oxford, before taking on the role of Senior Lecturer in 1988. He has been in his current position since 2004 and has expertise in Upper Respiratory Medicine. His research primarily focuses on the basic mechanisms of allergic rhinitis and asthma, particularly their influence on treatment strategies. Professor Durham has contributed significantly to the development of pharmacodynamic models for allergen challenges, conducting extensive studies on seasonal hay fever. He has a strong emphasis on translational studies of allergen immunotherapy, elucidating mechanisms of human antigen-specific tolerance to inform novel treatment approaches. He has served as the principal investigator in various international trials that led to the registration of allergen vaccines across Europe and the UK. He is also the current President of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and is involved with the Immune Tolerance Network Steering Committee of the National Institutes of Health. His efforts have been recognized with prestigious lectureships and awards in the field of clinical allergy.
