Biography

Stephen Gilchrist is an Associate Professor in the School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia. He belongs to the Yamatji people and the Inggarda language group from northwestern Australia. Between 2003 and 2013, he worked as a writer and curator for major Indigenous Australian collections in institutions including the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), the British Museum (London), the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. He has curated numerous exhibitions in Australia and the United States and has written extensively on Indigenous art in Australia. From 2012 to 2016, Gilchrist held the position of Australian Studies Visiting Curator at Harvard Art Museums, illustrating his commitment to fostering international dialogue surrounding Indigenous art scholarship. He served as the Deputy Director of the Power Institute and chaired the Indigenous Advisory Group at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 2018 to 2022, emphasizing Indigenous curation and expression of sovereignty in his work.
