Biography

Stephen Hessler is the global practice leader of Sidley’s Restructuring group, where he represents debtors, creditors, and investors in large complex corporate Chapter 11 cases, out-of-court restructurings, and acquisitions. He has counseled clients across a broad range of industries, including energy, gaming, hospitality, real estate, telecommunications, financial institutions, and manufacturing. Hessler has been recognized by numerous industry publications including Chambers USA (2015–2023), which noted him as ‘excellent corporate bankruptcy counsel, brilliant strategist, tactician’ in the 2022 edition. He is also recognized as a leading lawyer in Restructuring and Insolvency by IFLR1000 (2016) and has been named a ‘Key Lawyer’ in the area of Restructuring by Legal 500 (2016). Additionally, Hessler was highlighted as one of the 10 Bankruptcy ‘MVPs’ by Law360 in 2015 for his awards and rankings. Besides teaching at Booth, he is a frequent lecturer and author on restructuring-related topics. He teaches a restructuring class in the fall at the University of Pennsylvania Law School for Wharton students and was honored with the Wharton Teaching Excellence Award for the years 2019 and 2020. Hessler co-founded the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Restructuring Studies, a multidisciplinary initiative intended to address topical restructuring issues and influence public policy debates in a practical way for investors, practitioners, academics, and regulators. He has also served as the chairman of the Advisory Board on Administrative Claims, Critical Vendors, and Pressures on Liquidity for the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Commission to Study the Reform of Chapter 11 from 2012 to 2015.
