Biography

Stephen Heyworth is a Bowra Fellow and Tutor in Classics at Wadham College, University of Oxford. He has taught extensively in the areas of textual criticism and Latin literature, particularly focusing on poetry from the first century B.C. Heyworth completed his undergraduate education and doctoral studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, and subsequently taught at the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds. His doctoral research, centered on the manuscript tradition of the Latin elegist Propertius, culminated in a detailed textual commentary entitled 'Cynthia'. He has published several commentaries on notable works such as Propertius 3 (Oxford, 2011) and Ovid's Fasti 3 (Cambridge, 2019). Additionally, he has served as an editor for the Classical Quarterly from July 1993 to November 1998. His current research focuses on the text and manuscript traditions of Ovid's Fasti, particularly the commentary on Book 3, and he is involved in projects concerning various anonymous texts associated with Virgil and Ovid. Heyworth's longer-term interests extend to the works of Catullus and parts of the Ovidian corpus, demonstrating a solid commitment to advancing the understanding of Latin poetry and textual criticism.
