Dr. Stephen Hopkins

Biography

Stephen Hopkins is a music theorist, composer, and performer. He is a member of the graduate faculty in music theory at Penn State University, where he has served since 2003. Prior to joining Penn State, Hopkins directed music at North Florida Community College for six years. He holds both master's and doctoral degrees in music theory from Florida State University, where he was awarded a University Fellowship for his graduate studies. His undergraduate degree was obtained from the College of William and Mary. As a founding member of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, Hopkins has focused his research on composers such as Scriabin and Messiaen, as well as exploring jazz and film music. At the Penn State School of Music, he coordinates online education and has authored four online music courses. With extensive experience in online education, he has contributed articles on the subject and has been an invited presenter at various conferences, including the Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI) and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). His compositions have been performed by soloists and ensembles across several states, and notable performances include the anthem "Glory Lord Filled Temple" and the song "Sail Away." An instrumental duet titled "Night Vision" for oboe and piano was commissioned by oboe faculty member Timothy Hurtz, with its premiere performance featuring both musicians.
