Biography

Professor Stephen Jenkins is a leading researcher in Physical and Computational Surface Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the physics and chemistry of solid surfaces, explored predominantly through first-principles computational techniques, often in conjunction with ultra-high vacuum single-crystal experiments. His past and present research interests include surface structure and symmetry, with a particular emphasis on chirality across multiple length-scales. He investigates reaction dynamics of highly-oxidizing species on semiconducting surfaces, as well as the electronic structures of half-metal surfaces and states of non-trivial topology. His work also covers the study of bulk surface phonon band structures and the effects of hydrogen and halogen bonding in adsorbed overlayers on graphite and gold surfaces. Additionally, he is an author of notable books such as 'Chirality of Solid Surfaces' (Wiley, 2018) and 'Foundations of Surface Science' (Oxford University Press, 2023). He lectures undergraduate courses on electronic structure and properties of solids, surfaces and interfaces, and electronic structure of solid surfaces.
