Biography

Stephen Kinzer is an award-winning foreign correspondent who has covered more than 50 countries across five continents. His articles and books have placed him among the notable storytellers in foreign policy. He spent over 20 years as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, with postings that included significant events in Central America and Germany. Kinzer served as the bureau chief in Nicaragua during the 1980s and later covered the German unification from Bonn and Berlin. In 1996, he established the New York Times bureau in Istanbul and has since travelled extensively across Turkey and Central Asia. His published works include "Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the American Coup in Guatemala," and "Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq," which scrutinize U.S. interventions worldwide. His recent books have received acclaim for their dynamic storytelling and critical exploration of U.S. foreign policy. Kinzer’s academic contributions include teaching journalism, political science, and international relations at Northwestern University and Boston University. Currently, as a Senior Fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University, he writes a world affairs column for the Boston Globe. Kinzer has received honorary doctorates from Dominican University and the University of Scranton for his contributions to journalism and commentary on international relations.
