Biography

Professor Steve Lee served the School of Architecture as department head for twelve years (2008–2020) and directs taught Design/Build Studio in the school’s professional degree programs prior to his retirement in June 2024. He was the faculty advisor for the school’s Solar Decathlon teams in 2002, 2005, and 2007, and his teaching activities integrated undergraduate and graduate courses related to design, environment, materials, structures, and construction. In 2019, Design Intelligence selected Professor Lee as one of the '25 Admired Educators'. His scholarly practice activities focus on issues of systems integration, material innovation, and renewable energy within the integrated building delivery process of high-performance commercial and residential architecture. As a LEED accredited professional, he provided sustainable design consulting services to institutional and commercial clients across Europe, Asia, Canada, and the United States. Some innovative sustainable projects that Professor Lee has been involved in include the Armstrong World Industries Susquehanna House, the Jean Canfield Government Canada Building, and the PA Department of Environmental Protection South Central Office Building, among multiple projects on the Carnegie Mellon Campus.
