Biography

Stephen Mainzer is a social scientist and designer who seeks to recenter place and U.S. democracy by exploring the intertwined environmental and political sentiments that shape individuals' senses of place. His research focuses on how these sentiments affect identity, thoughts, and actions regarding the environment. Centered on Pennsylvania and the Chesapeake Bay watershed, Mainzer teaches introductory design studio courses emphasizing the process, culture, and communication. He encourages emerging designers to learn co-regulation in studio environments and to work toward self-regulation and independent inquiry as they engage in Penn State's rigorous and nationally recognized program. His academic journey includes a dual-title Ph.D. in Architecture and Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, reflecting his commitment to integrating ecological and social dimensions in design practices. With six years of professional practice, Mainzer collaborates with colleagues in allied fields, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research.
