Stephen Monismith is the Obayashi Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Professor of Oceans at Stanford University. His research focuses on environmental geophysical fluid dynamics with applications in fluid mechanics, studying flow processes in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans, particularly the ecological impacts of these flows. His current research includes investigations into estuarine hydrodynamics and mixing processes, as well as studying flows over coral reefs and inner shelves, turbulence in density stratified fluids, and the physical-biological interactions within phytoplankton and benthic systems. Monismith has led numerous research projects, combining fieldwork and computational studies on wave-driven flows, stratified turbulence due to shoaling internal waves, and the effects of grazing on coral reefs and kelp forests. He directs the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory at Stanford and has been involved in scientific panels focused on the sustainability of the San Francisco Bay/Delta water supply system and ecosystem.
