Dr. Stephen Muecke

Biography

Stephen Muecke is an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, specializing in Ethnography and part of the Environmental Humanities programme. He has extensively written about Indigenous Australia, with a focus on the Kimberley region and the Indian Ocean. Muecke is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities and has served as an adjunct professor at the Nulungu Institute, Notre Dame University, Broome. Over his academic career, he has authored and edited 31 books and published 31 refereed articles as of 2000. Muecke has supervised 69 research theses, including honours and PhD candidates, and has a background as a creative writer in fictocritical writing and poetry. He has received multiple awards for his literary work and contributions to the study of Aboriginal philosophy, reflecting his commitment to intergenerational cultural transfer and narrative ecologies within environmental contexts.
