Biography

Stephen Mullen is a lecturer in History at the University of Glasgow, specializing in the historical contexts of Atlantic slavery and its enduring legacies in Scotland. He completed his PhD at the University of Glasgow in 2015, with a thesis that investigated Scotland’s relationship with Atlantic slavery from approximately 1775 to the emancipation of the British West Indies in 1834/38. Stephen has conducted extensive research trips to Caribbean islands, focusing on the lives of Scottish merchants and planters. His monograph, 'Glasgow Sugar Aristocracy: Scotland and Caribbean Slavery, 1775-1838,' published in 2022, further explores these themes. His postdoctoral research included a project on the experiences of runaway slaves in 18th century Great Britain and his involvement in creating the 'Slavery, Abolition, and the University of Glasgow' report, which led to the institution's Reparative Justice strategy. Stephen has consulted for various museums and councils on the historical implications of slavery and is currently working on a project assessing Scotland's historic connections to slavery. His teaching and supervision also reflect his expertise in social and economic histories of slavery and its lasting impacts in modern contexts.
